Spring Foraging Walk

Bethnal Green Nature Reserve

London

About

Learn how to forage for wild plants and fungi with Izzy from Rights For Weeds, in this, the last of a series of foraging walks to see us through Spring into early Summer. Each foraging walk is an informal but informative moving workshop. We'll gather first in the woods to share a wild refreshment, and we'll then visit the pond, medicine garden and mushroom growing zone, meeting plants and fungi along the way. We'll finish by preparing some food with what we find. There'll be some wild cakes to share too. For those of us who are new to foraging, this is your chance to learn to identify a myriad of useful and interesting plants and mushrooms. If you've been foraging before then you're still more than welcome, but don't expect the same experience - plants like to grow and change. We'll be discussing plant folklore, history, recipes, traditional medicinal uses, bushcraft, different methods of preparation and other ways to integrate them into our lives. We can also chat about the history, politics and legality of foraging. You'll leave with enough knowledge to confidently forage by yourself. SCHEDULE 1.30 - 2pm: Seated introduction to foraging and to the Bethnal Green Nature Reserve 2pm - 4pm: Foraging walk 4pm - 4.30pm: Wild picnic and closing circle TERMS - please read all the terms before booking a ticket: CONCESSIONS Here's how the ticket prices work: £10 Low-income tickets are for anyone who's struggling financially, and might find it hard to afford day-to-day food shopping. £25 Solidarity tickets are for those who are under-represented in the professional foraging community. This includes POC, disabled folk, chronically ill folk, etc. £25 Gratitude tickets are for caretakers of the Bethnal Green Nature Reserve. £35 General tickets are for everyone else. This is done on a trust basis. We'll never ask questions about your ticket. Please buy a standard ticket if you can afford it. ACCESSIBILITY *Please let us know if you have any accessibility needs. *The entire site is step-free but paths are woodchip and may not be usable by some wheelchairs. We'll be walking at a very slow pace. There will be a lot of stopping and talking. There is a step-free all-gender compost toilet onsite. *RFW is beyond happy to make special considerations for any other needs. If there’s anything that you think I should know, get in touch. *Our risk assessment is available on request. Get in touch if you'd like to see it. *Support workers and carers are welcome at no extra cost, but likewise please get in touch to let me know that they're coming. SUSTAINABILITY Whilst nibbling is encouraged, please note that we won't be harvesting anything to take home. You will, however, leave with enough knowledge to identify plants on your own. This way you can safely forage somewhere where they're growing abundantly. The dwindling green spaces in London make it all the more important that we are respectful. REFUNDS POLICY Tickets are non-refundable, but they are transferrable, so if you find that you can't make it, you can send your ticket to a friend on Fixr. If you can't make it but would like to transfer your ticket to a different date, this is only possible if the new date still has available places 48 hours prior. Unfortunately we can only have a limited number of attendees per walk. ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY Any instances of the following will be rejected from this event without refund: *Physical or verbal violence *Any discriminations because of race, gender, physical/mental disability, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, religion, or age FOOD We'll be nibbling, but we won't be picnicking until 4pm, so it's recommended that you eat lunch before the walk. CHILDREN Children are welcome at no extra charge, but please get in touch with Rights For Weeds to let us know.
