Spring Foraging Walk

Bethnal Green Nature Reserve

London

About

The first of a series of foraging walks to see us through Spring into early Summer. We will be at the Bethnal Green Nature Reserve / Phytology, a stronghold of wildness in central London. This event is a walking workshop and discussion about wild plants and fungi. As well as learning about the history and politics of foraging, we'll learn how to identify and use many different wild plants and fungi. This includes roots, shoots, fruits and flowers. We might even meet some poisonous ones. For those of us who are new to foraging, this is your chance to learn to identify a myriad of useful and interesting plants. If you've been foraging before then you're still more than welcome, but don't expect the same experience - plants like to grow and change. This year we'll also look at the BGNR's new mushroom microfarm, and talk about fungi and mycology. As well as identification, we'll be discussing plant folklore, history, recipes, traditional medicinal uses, bushcraft, different methods of preparation and other ways to integrate them into our lives. At the end of the walk, we'll make a dip together with what we find and also share some wild tea and cake. If you're easily peckish, I would recommend having lunch before the walk. CONCESSIONS Here's how the ticket prices work: £10 Low-income tickets are for anyone who's struggling financially, and might find it hard to afford day-to-day food shopping. £25 Solidarity tickets are for those who are under-represented in the professional foraging community. This includes POC, disabled folk, chronically ill folk, etc. £25 Gratitude tickets are for caretakers of the Bethnal Green Nature Reserve. £35 General tickets are for everyone else. This is done on a trust basis. We'll never ask questions about your ticket. ACCESSIBILITY *Please let us know if you have any accessibility needs. *The entire site is step-free but paths are woodchip and may not be usable by some wheelchairs. We'll be walking at a very slow pace. There will be a lot of stopping and talking. There is a step-free all-gender compost toilet onsite. *RFW is beyond happy to make special considerations for any other needs. If there’s anything that you think I should know, get in touch. *Our risk assessment is available on request. Get in touch if you'd like to see it. *Support workers and carers are welcome at no extra cost, but likewise please get in touch to let me know that they're coming. SUSTAINABILITY Whilst nibbling is encouraged, please note that we won't be harvesting anything to take home. You will, however, leave with enough knowledge to identify plants on your own. This way you can safely forage somewhere where they're growing abundantly. The dwindling green spaces in London make it all the more important that we are respectful. REFUNDS POLICY Tickets are non-refundable, but they are transferrable, so if you find that you can't make it, you can send your ticket to a friend on Fixr. If you can't make it but would like to transfer your ticket to a different date, this is only possible if the new date still has available places 48 hours prior. Unfortunately we can only have a limited number of attendees per walk. ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY Any instances of the following will be rejected from this event without refund: *Physical or verbal violence *Any discriminations because of race, gender, physical/mental disability, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, religion, or age
