About

Blue Jean (with Q&A) Dir: Georgia Oakley Cast: Rosy McEwen, Kerrie Hayes, Lucy Halliday 2022/15/97mins/UK This year Campus Cinema is very excited to be collaborating with the LGBTQ+ society to mark the 20th anniversary of the repeal of Section 28 in England and Wales with a screening of Blue Jean and a live Q&A with Professor Catherine Lee afterwards. Blue Jean is a film that takes place during a time when this homophobic law, which prohibited the ‘promotion' of homosexuality in schools, was still in effect. The story follows a young lesbian P.E. teacher named Jean, who is struggling to deal with the effects of this new legislation on how she lives her life. The arrival of a new student makes her life even more difficult, as she struggles to support this student navigate her sexuality under a law that stigmatises such acts. There will be a live Q&A after this screening with Professor Catherine Lee, who spent over twenty years as a teacher and whose experiences and diaries of Section 28 inspired the making of this film. She is now a Professor of Inclusive Education at Anglia Ruskin University.
