About

Bio: Dr Naomi Norton (married name: Underwood) studied at the University of Leeds and completed a BA in Music and a MMus in the Applied Psychology of Music. Her subsequent doctoral studies at the Royal Northern College of Music focused on an exploration of health-related topics in instrumental and vocal music lessons from the perspectives of teachers in the United Kingdom. Naomi's primary employment is with the University of York (UK) as a Lecturer in Music Education, module leader for an undergraduate module entitled 'Musicians' Health and Wellness', and MHW Coordinator. Naomi is currently on the committee for the ISME MHW Special Interest Group. The driving force behind her professional activities is the belief that no-one should be denied the opportunity to progress to the level of musical proficiency that they desire: this could relate to health and wellness, social and financial status, or any other aspect perceived as a barrier. She is currently on maternity leave looking after her second child, Thea (in the picture!), who will most likely be joining us for the session! Session overview: Music(ians'), Health, and Wellness This seminar will begin with a consideration of the relationships between music, health, and wellness before focusing on what we, as musicians of all types, can do to promote and protect our health and wellness. I'll bring a wide variety of resources, activities, and discussion topics so that I can respond to what those who attend are interested in. So if you are a musician and would like to have a long and sustainable engagement with this artform then come along and join the conversation!
