Menopause Support Group Northern Ireland is delighted to be hosting Dr Louise Newson. Dr Louise Newson BSc(Hons) MBChB(Hons) MRCP FRCGP GP and Menopause Specialist Dr Newson is a GP and menopause specialist and holds an Advanced Menopause Specialist certificate with Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare and the British Menopause Society. She is passionate about improving education about the perimenopause and menopause and improving awareness of safe prescribing of HRT to healthcare professionals. She is the founder of the balance app, The Menopause Charity, and creator of the balance website (home to the world’s largest menopause library), the Dr Louise Newson podcast and is a member of the Government Menopause Taskforce. In 2019, Dr Newson set up a not- for- profit company, Newson Health Research and Education, to further research into the menopause. This includes the Newson Health Menopause Society, a society for healthcare professionals and experts who are passionate about improving women’s health and understand the impact of hormones in disease prevention and maintenance of future health. Medical career Dr Newson studied medicine and pathology at The University of Manchester and graduated with First Class BSc (Hons) in Pathology in 1992 and MB ChB with Honours in 1994. After, Dr Newson pursued a career in hospital medicine, obtaining MRCP in 1998, before moving to specialise in General Practice and medical writing. She has been a writer and editor for many medical journals including GP (magazine) (2000-2018) and was women’s health editor for British Journal of Family Medicine (2013-2018). Dr Newson has written numerous articles to educate and upskill healthcare professionals, including the Royal College of General Practitioners’ Essential Knowledge Updates and the RCGP’s e-learning for Healthcare modules. Dr Newson is a member of the Royal College of Physicians (1998) and qualified as a member of the Royal College of General Practitioners with Distinction in 2000 (MRCGP) and was subsequently made a Fellow in 2016 (FRCGP). Raising awareness of the menopause Her first book, the Menopause: all you need to know in one concise manual was published by Haynes Publishing in 2019 and went on to be an Amazon bestseller. Her second book, Preparing for Perimenopause and Menopause, was published by Penguin Randomhouse in 2021 and was a Number 1 Sunday Times bestseller. Dr Newson continually strives to produce clear and evidence-based free content for people about the perimenopause and menopause on the balance website and on her range of social media platforms. She works regularly with a range of organisations to provide advice regarding menopause in the workplace, collaborates with charities and professional bodies to raise awareness of the needs of menopausal women. She also raises awareness of the menopause via regular TV appearances, including This Morning and ITV’s Lorraine and the 2021 documentary “Sex, Myths and the Menopause”. Radio appearances include BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour and Dr Newson is a regular guest on podcasts and Instagram lives for well-known figures including the Body Coach Joe Wicks. She also regularly writes articles and offers expert advice for national newspapers and magazines.
