An afternoon and evening of navigation training, and hopefully not getting too lost... This ticket gives you access to the evening lecture at 18:30 Friday 24th and a day's practice on Dartmoor on Saturday 25th or Sunday 26th depending on your availability. The lecture on the 24th March is compulsory to attend a practice day on Dartmoor. After you buy your ticket please specify what days you are available for the practice on Dartmoor. This course will involve a full 8 hours of physically demanding hiking over rough terrain. We expect a certain level of fitness. This is a 2-booter on the ExSOC boot rating scale. The lecture in the evening on the 24th of March will cover the following: • Advanced map and compass work • Navigation in bad visibility (mist/fog) • Night navigation • Leadership techniques • Micronaving • What to do when things go wrong • Route selection We will assume knowledge of (covered in the basic navigation training): • Basic map and compass work • Introductory knowledge of basic navigation techniques, such as hand railing. • Mountain weather forecasts • Basic route planning • Basic GPS use On Saturday or Sunday, depending on what day you are going, we will be going to Dartmoor from 12:30 until late evening (around 11 pm). Please bring the following kit (Dartmoor in March can still be very cold and wet, especially at night): • A pair of walking boots (strong ankle support required) • A pair of leggings/walking trousers. No jeans! • Waterproof coat and trousers – can be borrowed • Hat and gloves • Gaiters if you have them • Dinner • Snacks • 1.5L of water minimum • 300 Lumin Headtorch • Spare Batteries/headtorch If you have any questions, please message Ed Harley ([email protected]) or Will Duke ([email protected]).
