Pizzo Magatyana Ensemble

*Pizzo Magatyana* is a South African bassist from Khayelitsha whose musical roots lie in township African jazz and mbaqanga. Inspired by his father, an African music composer, he began his musical journey on the flute before transitioning to bass guitar. Currently studying at Stellenbosch University, he is expanding his artistry through both double bass and bass guitar, exploring classical and jazz traditions. His development has been shaped by collaborations and interactions with respected musicians, while his studies have opened opportunities in both performance and music education. Influenced by legends such as Mbongeni Ngema, Hugh Masekela, and Winston Mankunku Ngcukana, Magatyana is committed to building a meaningful career in music and using his compositions to celebrate the unique role and beauty of every instrument.
