Mary Coughlan is often described as the greatest female vocalist that Ireland has ever produced, standing alongside some of the world’s most iconic jazz singers. She is unique in blending whisky-blurred, smoke-seared, husky notes with the laconic wit of Billie Holiday and Peggy Lee. She draws the line of deep, down and dirty blues singers back to Bessie Smith with the sardonic, bitter-sweet defiance and despair of Edith Piaf. Yet Mary Coughlan delivers it all in a delicious and unapologetic Irish drawl: sceptical, rueful, mournful and melting and ardent for love.
Mary Coughlan is one of our greatest singers because over 40 years she has made the most grown-up, uncompromising, wholly personal yet utterly universal music on either side of the Atlantic about what goes on between men and women. Singer-songwriter Jamie Lawson was the first artist signed to Ed Sheeran's record label, and his self-titled album reached #1 in the UK Album Chart. His single "Wasn't Expecting That" was an international hit, and in 2016 he won the prestigious Ivor Novello Award for 'Best Song Musically and Lyrically'. He has played venues from the smallest clubs to the biggest stadiums, opening for acts such as Deacon Blue, Vance Joy, Ed Sheeran and, of course, Mary Coughlan. He is an instinctive, inveterate songwriter to his very core.
Lawson is currently working on his 7th album (8th if you include the 2 lockdown EPs he made along the way), on his own label, Not Too Bad Records.
More recently he has been recording with Luke Potashnick in the producer's chair, alongside musicians Ethan Johns on drums and Richard Caulson on piano, as well as producer and singer/songwriter Luke Sital-Singh. The results of which will hopefully be heard early next year.
