our neighbour’s doors are open, and this December, Soweto is setting the table.
Makhelwane Festival turns 13 this year, and it’s bigger than ever. “Makhelwane” means neighbour, and the festival is built on the township tradition of neighbours opening their homes, sharing food and celebrating together. This year’s theme, Breaking Bread, brings that spirit to life through shared tables, live music, local flavour and authentic kasi culture.
What’s on:
FOOD: Street food, kasi dining and Jozi’s best flavours from local vendors and chefs
MUSIC: Live performances and local talent on the stage
MAKERS MARKET: Artisans, designers, young entrepreneurs and creatives showcasing and selling their work.
EXPERIENCES: Indigenous games (Bathi, Skotch, Matini and more), denim upcycling, patchwork and sneaker customisation.
WINE & NIGHTLIFE: Wine tastings, evening vibes and good company.
CONVERSATIONS: Talks and panels on innovation, SMMEs and township tourism.
