Kai Scott live at KAYA HQ Kai Scott is a 21 year old artist based in Cape Town. He is known for his unique songwriting style which blends thoughtful lyrics with intricate musical parts and striking melodies. His songwriting, which draws on figures like Bob Dylan, Haliu Mergia, Adrianne Lenker and John Fahey, is simultaneously personal and political and speaks to the experience of being a young person in the 2020s. He started performing solo acoustic at the age of 19 in late 2024 and landed a spot at Up The Creek Festival in February 2025. From then on he performed more around Cape Town, and eventually formed a backing band of jazz musicians, forming a blend of folk, rock and jazz. He has been performing with his band under ‘Kai Scott and The State’ and has slowly been building more and more of a name for himself. He returned to up The Creek in 2026 with The State and has continued to perform with them around the city, including an upcoming appearance in Season 3 of Big Little Concepts. Through all of this he has continued performing solo, playing various fundraisers and shows that highlight his lyrics and voice in a stripped back format.
