Healthcare Under Occupation, a panel event

Lady Mitchell Hall, Sidgwick Site, University of Cambridge, Cambridge

About

Hosted by Cambridge University Amnesty International, this event amplifies the urgent call for justice in Gaza. Amnesty International has long documented violations of international law in the region, including attacks on civilians and the targeting of medical facilities. The organisation continues to call for accountability, protection of healthcare workers, and an immediate end to unlawful violence against Palestinian people. At this panel, we bring forward the voices of medical professionals who have served on the frontlines in Gaza under extreme and contested conditions since October 2023. Hear directly from Dr Mariam Karimi, a UK-based anaesthetist and humanitarian physician who worked at Nasser Hospital during the siege, providing critical care under constant threat. Alongside her frontline medical service, Dr Karimi has been active in advocacy campaigns within the UK, including Boycott Teva and Stop Palantir in the NHS, highlighting the intersections between healthcare, ethics, and accountability. We will also hear from Nurse Kirsty Blacka, who recently returned from deployment at Al-Quds Hospital in Gaza, where she worked in trauma and emergency settings amid the collapse of medical infrastructure. In addition to her clinical work, Kirsty is the founder of Gaza Hygiene Kits (Instagram link ), a volunteer-led project delivering reusable, sustainable hygiene packs for women, children, and vulnerable groups in Gaza. After the presentations, the event will open into a wide-ranging Q&A and discussion, with emphasis on how attendees can engage in meaningful, lawful actions - from advocacy and campaigns to mobilising institutional pressure - to support healthcare and human dignity in conflict zones. Whether you are interested in global health, humanitarian justice, human rights, or activism, this event offers a rare opportunity to listen, learn, and act.
