"The Last Freedom: Thought, in George Orwell's '1984'"
As part of our Classics & Cakes lecture series, Charlie Swailes explores the idea that thought is the last freedom in the dystopian society of the book, as other freedoms are gradually stripped away from its citizens both explicitly and implicitly. She will focus on Winston's acts of rebellion that redefine what freedom is for the reader.
Charlie Swailes studied English at the University of York, where she also received a Masters Degree in Literature and Film. She now teaches English Language and Literature at Bradford Grammar School. In her spare time, she writes short and very short stories that have been published in various anthologies, including the National Flash Fiction Day Anthology.
