We would love you to join us for a friendly discussion about the themes of intersectionality between gender, class and race in the book ‘The Color Purple’. We will also watch Kimberle Crenshaw’s TED Talk on ‘The Urgency of Intersectionality’ to see how the issues raised in this fictional book can be seen in the real world.
The event is for anyone interested in literature and social issues including sexism, classism, and racism. We aim to learn together, gaining a better understanding of how gender, class and race intersect to exacerbate social issues, both past and present, as well as the role of literature (and other forms of media) in raising these issues. The subject matter is powerful and contains potentially emotionally challenging topics, such as violence, rape and oppression. Please look after yourself and step outside if the discussion points become uncomfortable.
The Greenhouse is wheelchair accessible, with accessible toilets nearby. The event will be calm, quiet and without bright lights to avoid overstimulation, and fidget toys are available
