About

"I will emerge from the forest, straighten my backbone, and it shall become my sword" Backbone, written by an anonymous Belarusian playwright, explores womanhood, inherited trauma, solidarity, and resistance in the face of censorship. In the wake of the seismic protests which erupted in Belarus in August 2020, this performance is a meditation on the right to rest and protest, quietly and publicly, celebrating the power of speaking truth into the open air. Weaving together Slavic folklore, ancient Greek mythology, and lived experience, Backbone reveals the pain of enforced silence and gives voice to an unshakable power, one which resides in the soil, the wind, and the trees. Backbone will be a free, outdoor performance taking place on 10th July, 7-8.45pm, at Reed Hall Pond in Exeter. Follow our Instagram @backbone100722 for updates.
