After-Hours Curator’s Tour of Aphrodite: The Making of a Goddess

Ashmolean Museum, Oxford

About

For Edgar Wind Society members only. How did a goddess worshipped in ancient Cyprus become one of the most enduring symbols of beauty and desire? Join the Edgar Wind Society for an exclusive after-hours tour of the Ashmolean’s major exhibition, Aphrodite: The Making of a Goddess, led by Dr Anja Ulbrich, the exhibition’s curator and A.G. Leventis Curator of Cypriot Antiquities at the Ashmolean Museum. Tracing Aphrodite’s extraordinary journey from her ancient origins through the Greek and Roman worlds, Renaissance Europe and into the present day, the exhibition brings together sculpture, painting, archaeological treasures and contemporary art to explore how the goddess has been continually reimagined across the centuries. Guided by the exhibition’s curator, we will consider how Aphrodite’s changing image reflects different understandings of love, beauty, femininity and desire, and why she continues to captivate us thousands of years after her creation.
