About

From Vision to Value: Building a Sustainable Football Economy for Africa Sixty years ago, in 1966, African nations took a stand. Led by Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, the continent boycotted the FIFA World Cup in a bold assertion of dignity, representation, and continental ambition. That moment reshaped global football and secured Africa’s place in the game. Today, Africa stands at another turning point. At the beginning of this year, AFCON once again demonstrated the power of football on the continent — its reach, its emotion, and its ability to unite millions. But beyond the spectacle, it revealed something deeper. When football leaves the pitch, it becomes an institutional test of governance, infrastructure, and ultimately, of how much value Africa is able to capture from its own game. This is the paradox. Africa produces world-class talent and continues to shape leagues across the globe. Its cultural influence is undeniable. Yet the economic architecture of football remains largely externalised, with the continent capturing only a fraction of the value it generates. The challenge of our time is no longer representation. It is value creation, governance, and sustainability. In this context, we announce the next chapter. 🌍 The Africa Football Business Summit 2026 will take place in Accra, Ghana. In a FIFA World Cup year, when football once again sits at the centre of global economics, politics, and cultural influence, AFBS 2026 positions African football within the continent’s broader economic transformation. Accra is not just a host city. It is the home of Pan-African thought and the seat of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat, the most ambitious economic integration project on the continent. Over the past four years, AFBS has grown into a credible, independent platform that convenes stakeholders from across government, football, business, and development. In 2026, that platform will evolve from an annual convening into a continental platform for policy dialogue, investment facilitation, and system-level reform in African football. At the centre of this evolution is Football as Infrastructure (FaI), a framework developed by The Football Foundation for Africa. It positions football not merely as a sport, but as a strategic asset capable of supporting youth development, public health, employment, urban regeneration, and broader economic value chains. To deliver this vision at the highest standard, we are pleased to be working with Beyond The Line Africa as our Official Implementation Partner. With over a decade of experience delivering high-impact, multi-stakeholder events across the continent, they bring deep expertise in execution, stakeholder coordination, branding, and experiential design, translating ambition into a seamless, high-quality Summit experience. Africa already has the ingredients: a youthful population, a growing consumer market, and a globally influential football culture. What is required now is structure. AFBS 2026 represents a shift from fragmented efforts to coordinated systems, from talent export to value retention, and from conversation to implementation. If 1966 was about claiming a place in the game, then 2026 must be about claiming value from it. More details on the venue, partners and participation will be shared in the coming weeks.
