CW: Some scenes of violence. ----- Vaucelles, Flanders, 14th century. The town of Vaucelles is besieged and threatened by famine. Supplies run low and starvation looms while the King of France promises aid only in the spring. In order to save the town, the leading Aldermen have decided to get rid of the 'useless mouths'. Tomorrow, before sunset, the ill, the elderly, the children and the women will be driven out of the town, into the ditches. We follow the d’Avesnes family as we witness how this political decision affects spouses, parents, siblings and lovers. Vaucelles hopes to find salvation in this sacrifice, but does desiring freedom and justice for tomorrow justify tyranny today? Published four years before the Second Sex, Les bouches inutiles shows the early form of Beauvoir’s ideas on women’s freedom and emancipation, gender and political power. From Medieval Flanders, to France during the Second World War to today’s recent waves of totalitarianism throughout the world, the question of whose life is deemed ‘useful’ and intrinsically worthy is one of universal relevance. ----- Cast: Louis d'Avesnes: Anne-Elizabeth Pozzar Jean-Pierre Gauthier: Patricia Elena Cipollitti Rodriguez Catherine: Zoubida Debbagh Clarice: Antonia Zimmermann Jacques Van der Welde: Lukas Gwozdz Georges d'Avesnes: Jonas Hertel François Rosbourg: Gabriel Darin Jeanne: Marithé Van der Aa Soldats, maçons, députés, gens du peuple: Harrison Gale, Louise Mai, Felicity Ray Femmes du peuple: May Mansour, Susan Reynolds, Georgia Watkins Cantinier, garde: Michaël Lessard ----- Crew: Director: Antonia Mappin-Kasirer Producers: Antonia Mappin-Kasirer and Marie-Andrée Plante Assistant Producers: Juliette Vani and Michaël Lessard Stage Manager: Marie-Andrée Plante Assistant Stage Manager: Michaël Lessard Marketing Manager: Marie-Andrée Plante Costume Design: Ksenia Dugaeva Front of house: Louise Fensby, Hélèna Kharmouche and Olivia Mappin-Kasirer Music credits: Erich Kory Thank you to the New College MCR, the New College Chapel and Jane Mappin for their support and generosity.
