The JOOT Theatre Company Presents: Robert Henryson's The Testament of Cresseid, Adapted for the stage by Jamie Reid Baxter and Ian Low. In its original form, The Testament of Cresseid by the fifteenth-century Scottish makar Robert Henryson is a narrative poem of just over six hundred lines in Older Scots. It tells the story of the tragic fate of Cresseid, a destiny left unexplored in Henryson’s main source, Chaucer’s fourteenth-centuryTroilus and Criseyde. Our dramatisation of the Scottish poem further reframes the tale of Cresseid within a WWII context. In our version, Margery, a young woman deeply attracted to the glamour she sees on the silver screen, falls asleep during an air raid and dreams of herself as Cresseid. In her dream, however, Henryson’s characters are reimagined as stars from the Golden Age of Hollywood.
