Yonela Mnana

Cape Town welcomes celebrated Joburg-based pianist, composer, vocalist and jazz scholar Yonela Mnana for a rare and intimate trio performance that brings together three distinctive musical voices. Mnana returns to one of his beloved cities with a repertoire that reflects his rich musical journey, featuring original compositions and songs from his forthcoming album. Joining him are Sean Sanby, a Cape Town-based composer, producer, bassist and educator whose music moves effortlessly between worlds, and Tefo Mahola, the Gugulethu-born multi-instrumentalist, composer, vocalist, pianist, drummer and percussionist. Together, the trio creates a stripped-down, deeply exploratory musical experience—one where the musicians listen, respond and push one another beyond familiar boundaries. Rooted in the traditions of South African jazz, their music opens space for spontaneity, experimentation and fresh sonic landscapes. This configuration is particularly special: Mnana rarely has the opportunity to perform in this trio format, making the evening a unique opportunity to experience his artistry in an intimate setting. A respected recording artist, educator and composer, Mnana's musical identity has been shaped by diverse cultural and educational experiences—from his Eastern Cape roots and Sepedi influences to his classical and jazz training at the University of the Witwatersrand. He holds a B.Mus with Honours and an M.Mus in Jazz Piano with distinction and is pursuing doctoral research into South African solo jazz pianism. Before releasing his acclaimed solo debut Baba in 2016, Mnana spent years performing across South Africa and internationally as a sideman, co-composer and developing bandleader.
