Slieve Donard is one of our favourite routes, and is sure to turn up every year! The Glen River route begins in Donard Park and leads up to the saddle, from where you begin the climb to the stunning views. On a clear day, you can even get a glimpse of Scotland or Wales on the horizon. Following tradition, we will end the there-and-back route with fish and chips!
Expected weather: chilly with chances of light rain. It will also be very windy at the top.
Terrain conditions: very steep inclines and uneven turf. In places it is rocky with no defined path.
Required kit:
ankle supporting footwear that you can wear for long periods - hiking boots
warm raincoat and layers, as it is likely to get very cold, wet, and windy
plenty of snacks and at least 2l of water to keep hydrated and energised
any required medication or antihistamines including epi-pens and inhalers - the route is not quickly accessible for emergency services
Mountaineering Ireland insurance via the QUB hiking society Fixr, or individual insurance (please provide proof at checkout)
This is a challenging hike that should not be attempted if you have any doubt about your ability to complete it. We may ask for evidence of previous hiking experience.
