This term, OUIS invites you to discover Oxford one glass at a time with Calici by the College. Each week, we’ll be heading to a different Oxford college for an Italian-style aperitivo: a chance to unwind, meet new people and explore some of the University’s most beautiful and characterful spaces.
This week: Jesus College
This week, our journey takes us to Jesus College, tucked away along the historic Turl Street in the very heart of Oxford. Founded in 1571 by Queen Elizabeth I following the initiative of Welsh cleric Hugh Price, Jesus holds the distinction of being the only Oxford college established during Elizabeth I’s reign and has long been affectionately associated with Wales.
Behind its beautiful stone façade lie centuries of history, charming quadrangles and an elegant seventeenth-century chapel, first consecrated in 1621. Once a centre for Welsh scholars, Jesus has grown into a vibrant international community while proudly preserving its distinctive heritage.
Today, the college offers a fascinating blend of Elizabethan architecture, centuries-old traditions and modern academic life, making it the perfect backdrop for an evening of Italian-style aperitivo, lively conversation and new friendships.
So join us for a calice (or two!) as we discover a little corner of Oxford's extraordinary history.
