EUSOG presents Iolanthe

Following yet another 5star sellout production in November, EUSOG are delighted to return with their 2019 Gilbert and Sullivan Production of 'Iolanthe'! Iolanthe is a comedy which follows the story of the banished fairy Iolanthe and her half fairy, half mortal son, Strephon. Iolanthe was banished from fairyland because she married a mortal. The Queen of the Fairies agrees to bring Iolanthe back and they try to help her son marry the woman he is in love with, Phyllis. This proves difficult as Phyllis is a ward to the Lord Chancellor who also fancies Phyllis and wishes to marry her himself. As the story unfolds we learn that the Lord Chancellor is in fact Iolanthe's husband and Strephon's father, the Lord Chancellor thought Iolanthe had died. The opera satirises many aspects of British government, law and society. In the end all is resolved and the Queen of the Fairies changes the law so that fairies can marry mortals.
