Dance in China has a long recorded history. Some Chinese dances today, such as dancing with long sleeves, have been recorded at least as early as the Zhou dynasty (c. 1045–256 BCE).
In this workshop, there’ll be a general introduction of several types of Chinese traditional dances followed by a short performance and you will also have the chance to wear the long sleeves to learn a few set moves that often used in the modern day performance. The sleeve may be long and narrow, long and wide, or similar to the "water sleeves" (long flowing detachable silk sleeves extended at the wrist) used in Chinese opera. Historical texts also recorded that dancers danced bending at the waist while moving their sleeves.
