In a fitting finale for our Lent termcard, we will be welcoming our very own retiring Master, Lord Chris Smith, Baron Smith of Finsbury, to deliver a farewell address and answer questions. As our sponsoring fellow, Lord Smith has provided our society with invaluable advice and support over the years, and he will be very sorely missed. Lord Smith will discuss his life in the public eye, reflecting on a lifetime in frontline politics.
In a storied career in public service, Lord Smith was a Member of Parliament for 22 years, serving as the Secretary of State for Culture, Media, and Sport under the Blair government. Coming out in 1984, Lord Smith became the first openly gay MP, and has long been a pioneer of gay rights, having more recently become the first MP to acknowledge he is HIV positive. More recently, Lord Smith chaired the Environment Agency, before becoming Master of Pembroke College in 2015, a role from which he is retiring this year.
Chris will be joining us in the Ferguson-Nazareth Room from 6pm. As always, this event is open to all, and generous refreshments will be provided. Join us in the Auditorium Foyer from 17:30 to enjoy them.
