Sultan Stevenson is one of the most exciting young jazz musicians in London today. He is currently studying jazz piano at The Guildhall School of Music from which he graduates in the summer of 2023. In 2020 Sultan emerged onto the scene with a rapidly developing artistic voice. Sultan cites McCoy Tyner, Kenny Kirkland, Geri Allen and Ahmad Jamal as some of his biggest inspirations. In 2022 Stevenson recorded his debut album with his trio (Jacob Gryn and Joel Waters) the album also features Josh Short (trumpet) and his mentor Denys Baptiste (tenor saxophone). The album, tipped for success, earned Sultan a signing from Whirlwind Recordings. It was released on March 24th and has received much critical acclaim.
In light of the current crisis in Palestine, all proceeds of this event will be donated to Medical Aid for Palestine @medicalaidpal delivering emergency support and medical aid for civilians suffering across the Gaza Strip.
JazzSoc is not an organisation with political aims. This is not a political event, rather an opportunity to divert the money from tonight to people who need it. JazzSoc has chosen this charity in aid of a humanitarian crisis rather than a political one.
For a night of fantastic live jazz and the chance to help bring tangible support for Palestinians suffering in Gaza, this isn’t one to miss.
