Aikido is a non-competitive martial art consisting of hand and body techniques ('taijutsu'), which are used along with strikes ('atemi') to unbalance an opponent in order to throw ('nage' techniques) or immobilise them with a lock. Aikido has its roots in the ancient warrior arts of Japan, particularly kenjutsu ('swordsmanship'), jojutsu ('stick-fighting') and ju-jutsu ('the gentle art'). The techniques rely on skill and the use of the opponent’s force against them, rather than brute strength. This means anyone can do aikido regardless of shape, size or gender.
At the GU Aikido Club, we train on Mondays (7:15pm-8:30pm) and Wednesdays (9pm-10:10pm) but this extra training provides us with a unique opportunity to train with black belts - although this sounds scary, it remains accessible to all levels, even complete beginners !
However, if you are interested in trying out aikido and can’t make it this Friday, join us during our Wednesday sessions (open to non GUSA members) to try out for free ! You only have to contact us (details below) with your full name so we can notify the reception of your coming.
In any case, bring comfortable clothes (no shorts !!) or a keigogi to change into, help put on the tatami and practice.
Meeting time and place for Friday: 6pm at the entrance of the Wolfson Medical School (on the Glasgow University Campus) and take the bus number 8 on Byres Road until Ferndale Court.
