Conversations In Medicine - QCMS Conference 2024

Shulman Auditorium, Queen's College

About

The Queen's College Medical Society (QCMS) are excited to announce our 2024 conference 'Conversations in Medicine' which will take place on Sunday 20th October 2024. The conference will feature 5 fantastic speakers from across medicine, each covering topics that are often underrepresented, and which we hope will spark conversation and debate. Thanks to kind donations from The Queen's College Academic Projects Fund and from 001 Taxis, we are able to offer a limited number of free tickets which include lunch in hall. These will be distributed on a first come first served basis, so get yours early! In order to avoid no shows, we will charge £3 for these tickets, which will be reimbursed on arrival (excluding the booking fee charged by FIXR, which is unfortunately non-refundable). Speaker line-up: - An Interview with Sir David Haslam: Sir David Haslam is a writer and healthcare policy consultant, and a past Chair of NICE, a former President and Chairman of the RCGP, and past-President of the BMA. He is currently a Non-Exec Director on an NHS Trust and Chair of the charity “Young Lives vs Cancer”. - Talking About Dying with Dr Victoria Bradley: Victoria completed her medical degree at the University of Cambridge before completing junior training in London. She undertook specialist training in Thames Valley and has been a substantive Consultant in Palliative Medicine at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust since 2019, where she is now Clinical Lead. - Effective Surgery In Difficult Environments with Mr Tim Goodacre: A recently retired reconstructive plastic surgeon from Oxford, with a background of work in resource poor settings and interest in development of appropriate surgical services. Past Vice-President of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, and President of BAPRAS (Specialty Association). - Dr Caroline Elton - occupational and counselling psychologist who has specialised in training and supporting medical students and doctors for the past 25 years. Author of Also Human: the inner lives of doctors. Senior Adviser at Norwich Medical school – a part-time role which she combines with running a specialist career consultancy for doctors together with her colleague, Dr Naomi Elton (no relation!). Her new book: Looking After: a portrait of my autistic brother will be published by Penguin in March 2025. Together with Naomi she has also recently completed a career handbook for doctors to be published by Oxford University Press. - Tackling Health Inequalities with Dr Gbemi David-West, specialist trainee in obstetrics and gynaecology with a special interest in women's health inequalities and an MSc in Medical Education.
