The third seminar of the #QS series, this is a particularly unique seminar that explores issues of contemporary relevance through a Quranic and shar’ī lens. This seminar introduces some fundamental Qur'anic paradigms to key questions and situations, balancing a number of considerations that span across society, politics and faith.
The seminar includes:
What is culture and social norms?
- ‘Urf (culture/social customs) in the Qur’an, and its role in the sharī’ah
- In a multicultural society, who’s ‘urf takes shar’ī precedence?
- Is there a ‘Muslim culture’ in the UK that we can speak of?
- Political, religious, and existential identity: do they come together, and if so, how? What does God say?
What type of social community does God refer to?
- The social, political and religious
- Why a community? How does God speak of its purpose?
- How does that translate for the context of ethno-cultural/religious communities in the UK?
- Quranic paradigms on identity, belonging and loyalties
Wider non-believing society:
- A sense of belonging to a multi-belief society?
- Does God want us to integrate? If so, what type of integration?
- What does the Qur’an suggest about social and cultural capital with wider society?
