The first ever Medical Innovation Conference 2020 hosted by the Queen's College Medical Society at The Shulman Auditorium on Sun 16th Feb 2020. The conference will include 6-7 speakers and we will provide refreshments and a lunch. This is a free event, but we will require a £2 deposit which will be returned on the day. Due to the online booking system, the only cost will be a small booking fee. Please contact us by email at [email protected] if you have any specific access requirements. Speakers: 1. Justin Hean - Principal Scientist at Evox Therapeutics. Following postdoctoral research at the University of Oxford, Justin was appointed Principal Scientist at Evox Therapeutics. Evox Therapeutics is an Oxford-based biotechnology company aiming to deliver entirely novel therapeutics by harnessing the natural trafficking capability of exosomes. Evox’s proprietary technology platform DeliverEX™ is used to modify exosomes, to load drugs into exosomes and to enable their delivery to target organs including the central nervous system. Justin will be speaking about Evox’s current work in exploring the potential for exosomes to address some of the limitations of protein, antibody and nucleic-acid based therapies, followed by a short Q&A session. 2. Dr Krishan Ramdoo – CEO & Founder of TympaHealth Technologies. Dr Krishan Ramdoo is a research registrar in Ear, Nose and Throat surgery and an NHS Clinical Entrepreneur Fellow. In 2017 he founded TympaHealth Technlogies, an ‘all-in-one’ hearing health assessment system designed to provide portable, cost-effective and accessible hearing care. The ‘Tympa System’ allows accurate screening, hearing testing, ear wax removal via micro-suction and sharing of information with ENT specialists around the world for efficient diagnosis and treatment of a variety of aural disorders. Work in this area is of great importance; according to the World Health Organisation 466 million people in the world – over 5% of the global population – suffer with disabling hearing loss, 34 million of whom are children. Dr Ramdoo will be speaking about establishing an innovative healthcare start-up and the work of TympaHealth to improve the efficiency and accuracy of hearing health assessment. 3. Iain Broadley and Ally Jaffee – Co-founders of Nutritank During their studies at Bristol Medical School, Iaian and Ally established Nutritank – a student-led ThinkTank and community with the aim of improving nutrition and lifestyle education within the medical school curricula as a vital component of delivering effective preventative healthcare. Nutritank has more than 20 medical school branches in the UK, a growing online and social media presence, and more than 300 students signed-up. Iain and Ally will be speaking on the importance of nutrition and lifestyle medicine in improving preventative care, and the process of establishing a national network and online hub to make vital information accessible. 4. Dr Molly Gilmartin – NHS England Clinical Entrapreneur and Chief Commercial Officer of Induction Healthcarse Group PLC Dr Gilmartin has been widely involved in the medical innovation sphere. During her time at medical school, she co-founded founded Applican, a company providing affordable medical school application courses to provide guidance and level the playing field for those hoping to study medicine in the UK. She was also a founding team member and Head of Community for Forward, a digital health start-up aiming to connect healthcare professionals and teams around the world in a confidential and accessible manner. She is now an NHS England Clinical Entrepreneur and Chief Commercial Officer for the Induction Healthcare Group PLC, which builds efficient software for healthcare organisations. Dr Gilmartin will be talking about her path to a career in medical innovation, and disruptive leadership with technology in the NHS. 5. Professor Elizabeth Molyneux OBE, MBBS, FRCP, FRCPCH, FCEM, DSc h.c. Aside from utilising digital and technological advances to innovate the delivery of healthcare, there is significant scope for improving healthcare outcomes globally via the implementation of simple, effective policies and initiatives. Professor Molyneux moved to Malawi with her husband in 1974, where she contributed expansively to the improvement of paediatric care. She established an A&E unit in which, through the introduction of simple emergency triage and improved staff training inpatient child mortality was halved. She is also a founding member of the World Health Organisation training course on Emergency Triage, Assessment and Treatment (ETAT). Alongside this, she is a member of several paediatrics advisory boards and has an impressive research history with over 300 peer-reviewed papers. Elizabeth and her husband were awarded OBE’s in 2007 for services to medicine. She will be speaking about the improvement of clinical care via simple policy and healthcare training initiatives. 6. Professor Shafi Ahmed – Surgeon and Renowned Healthcare Innovator Professor Shafi Ahmed is a multi-award-winning surgeon, teacher and healthcare entrepreneur. He is a 3x TED speaker who has been featured in over 400 newspapers, tech journals and mainstream TV news channels. He has delivered over 250 international keynotes in 30 countries on the future of healthcare and is recognised as one of the top 20 global influencers in Digital Health and Virtual Reality. Professor Ahmed is a laparoscopic cancer surgeon at The Royal London and St Bartholomew’s Hospitals, and was the first surgeon in the world to use Google Glass to live-stream an operation, watched in over 100 countries. He took this one step further in 2016, using virtual reality to augment the live-streaming process, seen by 4.5 million people on Twitter and earning him the accolade of most watched surgeon in human history. He is also the recipient of the Silver Scalpel award in 2015 as the best national trainer in surgery, amongst countless other awards including the Future NHS award for NHS70 in 2018. He will be talking about his extensive work in innovative healthcare technology and his current involvement in establishing the first ‘Digital Hospital’ in Bolivia.
