Ottery Saint Mary

About

As the evenings draw in and our University campuses take on their beautiful, autumnal colours, we can once again look forward to welcoming some of our favourite, seasonal traditions here in Exeter – including the infamous Tar Barrels of Ottery St. Mary. For those of you unfamiliar with the event, Tar Barrels is a local, Devon tradition held in the town of Ottery St. Mary, just outside of Exeter, which coincides each year with bonfire night. GETTING THERE Pick up on will be on Perry Road (outside Washington Singer) from 18:00. The last coach will be leaving at 20:00. No alcohol is to be brought on the coaches. While you’re there we want you to have a good time, but we also want you to stay safe as the event gets very crowded and you will be in close proximity to fire and burning tar barrels. You’ll need to wear sensible clothing and comfortable footwear as the streets can get very dirty from the ashes on the ground and your clothes will soak up the smoke in the atmosphere. For your safety, please read the guidelines on the official Tar Barrels website, where you can also find useful information and locations for the evening. Please note, by attending the event, you are agreeing to the risk and the organisers are not responsible for your safety while you’re at the event. Coming back to Exeter Coaches will pick you up from the drop off point from 22:00 and the last coach will be leaving at 00:00. All coaches will drop off at Paris Street and North Park Road. We hope you have a great evening at the Tar Barrels at Ottery St Mary! Remember to stay safe and don’t forget to tag us @exeterguild in your photos on social media!
