30 mile challenge - Torquay to Exeter

Join us for the annual Tor-Ex challenge, a 30 mile hike from Torquay to Exeter! It will be for charity so please get people to sponsor you to raise as much money as possible. If you do not want to walk the entire 30 miles, you may take the train back to Exeter from Teignmouth, Dawlish, Dawlish Warren, or Starcross. As it will be hot, please make sure you bring: Plenty of water, at least 2 litres but there will be opportunities to fill up en route; a good lunch (bananas are an excellent choice for such an activity), but there will be opportunities to get refreshments en route; sunscreen; as well as sturdy walking boots, and good pair of socks to prevent blisters. Length and rating: 30 miles - Extreme, although do not feel obliged to do all 30 miles as there are train stations en route Terrain and rating: Lots of up and down along coast path between Torquay and Teignmouth, with some inclines very steep, whilst from Dawlish to Exeter it is almost dead flat. Public Transport: We will take the 7:30am train from Exeter St Davids to Torquay. This train stops at Polsloe Bridge (7:18), St James Park (7:20), Exeter Central (7:24) so get on at whichever station is closest as we’ll be doing a lot of walking! We will be in the front coach of the train so meet us on the train. It could be worth considering buying a return to Torquay so that if you can’t make it the whole way you can get back to Exeter very cheaply. We will also take the Shaldon-Teignmouth ferry, costing around £2. Before the walk: Remember to wear strong, sturdy hiking boots or shoes. A waterproof layer and sunscreen is also recommended, as well as an extra sweater or hat for warmth.
