Thinking and Drinking W6: IS IT IRRATIONAL TO FEAR THE TELETRANSPORTER?

Wycliffe Hall

About

With introduction by Professor Eric Olson The teletransporter is a hypothetical machine which records your molecular composition, relays the information to another location, breaks you down into atoms, and re-creates you (from local stores of carbon, hydrogen, etc.) in the new location. Should anyone use the teletransporter? Is it a clever method of travel or does it kill people and make exact replicas of them? Answering these questions requires resolving questions surrounding personal identity and survival. What makes a person you? And what constitutes survival? Join the Socratic Society as we seek answers to all these questions, with the expert guidance of Prof. Eric Olson. Drinks and snacks available for the duration of the night! Event is open to all, but ticket priority will go to existing SocSoc members (tickets checked at the door). Event starts at 7.30pm at the Lecture Room at Wycliffe Hall. Please do not attend if you are showing symptoms of any infectious disease including Covid-19. If you'd like more information or have any questions, please see the Facebook event page. ------ Cancellation policy: in order to cancel your ticket, please contact Oxford Socratic Society on Facebook, or email us at [email protected]. Your ticket price (minus the FIXR fee) will be refunded as long as the cancellation is sent more than 24 hours before the event.
