Pergolesi’s ‘The Servant Mistress’ is an intermezzo in one act composed in 1733. At the heart of the ‘Quarrel of the Comic Actors', this opera buffa symbolized a shift from French lyrical theatre to a lighter, more farcical Italian opera. Choosing to use an English libretto, this production wishes to put forward the masterful way in which the music and lyrics merge, drawing you into the light comedy of a servant who convinces her employer to marry her. Staged into a modern setting, Uberto is exasperatedly trying to get his employees to tidy his newly renovated house in preparation for his welcome dinner that evening. Little does he know what kind of dinner party it will be!
Preceding the opera will be a vocal showcase by some of St Andrews’ most talented singers, playing along the fine line between text and music.
