About

Location: Harrison 203 Date: 19th November 2024 Time: 10:30-11:30 Title: Lorenz, Chaos and Weather Prediction Speaker: Prof Bob Beare Abstract: This talk will recount the accidental discovery of the butterfly effect (sensitivity to initial conditions) by the American Meteorologist, Edward Lorenz in the 1960s. This discovery both initiated the field of chaos in applied mathematics, and also put central the role of super computers in weather prediction. He will also summarise the role of supercomputers in weather and climate prediction, as well as in my own research of atmospheric turbulence modelling.
