About

Prof. Carroll is one of the most influential physicists and philosophers of physics today, and has made lasting contributions to quantum field theory, gravitation theory, cosmology, and the philosophy of science in general. We will here from him face-to-face on his thoughts about the completeness of modern physics. Here is his abstract for the talk: We all have atoms inside our bodies. And modern physics understands atoms very well -- what they are made of and how they behave. Is physics enough to ultimately explain life, consciousness, and the rest of the universe? I will argue that higher-level "emergent" phenomena should be compatible with physics as we currently understand it, without the need for any new ingredients or modifications. But I will also explore more elaborate forms of emergence, and discuss how they might be relevant in more general contexts.
