As a virtuoso pianist, symphonist, and prolific conductor, Rachmaninoff was no stranger to any grand theatre and concert hall in America or his native Russia. However, reflecting at the end of his life, it was his intimate, reverent choral settings which he held in highest regard.
Among these, his All-Night Vigil stands alone as a crowning achievement – a transcendent 70-minute composition written for the Eastern Orthodox service of the same name, a solemn and meditative ritual traditionally lasting through the night.
St Andrews Madrigal Group is delighted to illuminate this rarely seen, deeply spiritual side of Rachmaninoff by performing selections from this masterpiece alongside other complementary works.
