About

Join Amnesty International Exeter on Monday at 18:30 in the Bateman Lecture Theatre to mark the International Day of Elimination of Violence Against Women, where Dr Montiel McCann from the Runnymede Trust will offer a deep exploration centring around the intersection between Women's Human Rights in Britain and the British Press' representation of violence against women and girls. All ticket proceeds will be donated to the End Violence Against Women Coalition Charity. Dr Montiel McCann is a linguist and researcher for the Runnymede Trust, the UK’s leading racial justice think tank. Millie’s PhD research explored representations of women, femininity and feminism in the British broadsheet press from an intersectional feminist perspective. She has published papers on representations of femininity in British gossip magazines, transphobia in the British press, the use of ‘femonationalism’ in articles on burka bans, and on Scouse femininity on TikTok and X. Millie was formerly a lecturer in Linguistics at the University of Liverpool and latterly a lecturer in Media and Cultural Studies and Gender Studies at Lancaster University. She now works in the policy team at Runnymede, researching the hostile environment and racism.
