Bacchae is a guttural and gaudy Greek Tragedy, written by Euripides in 407 BCE.
Set in Thebes, it follows the revenge of Dionysus, the androgynous god of wine, who is disgusted by the King’s ruling to cancel the Dionysian Bacchanalia. The women of Thebes, under Dionysus’ spell, flee to the Cithaeron mountains and begin a feral commune. Pentheus, the King, wishes to bring the women back to Thebes and meets his demise in the process.
It is an exploration of feminine rage, hurt pride and masculinity in raw and violent forms.
